Work flow policy and within-worker and between-workers variability in performance.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Work flow policies are shown to induce a change in average between-workers variability (worker heterogeneity) and within-worker variability in performance times. In a laboratory experiment, the authors measured the levels of worker heterogeneity and within-worker variability under an individual performance condition, a work sharing condition, and a fixed assignment condition. The work sharing policy increased the levels of worker heterogeneity and worker variability, whereas the fixed assignment policy decreased them. These effects, along with work flow policy main effects on mean performance times and variability are examined. This article represents an initial step in understanding effects that may be important in the selection of an operating policy, the ignorance of which may lead to costly misestimates of performance.

Heterogeneity and Variability in the Context of Flow Lines
We propose a model in which between-individual differences in performance (heterogeneity) and within-individual differences in periormance over time (variability) affect flow line performance. The impact of heterogeneity and variability is contingent upon the flow line context, particularly the rules governing the way work moves between employees (work flow policy). We show how subtle changes i...

متن کاملPerformance-Based Financing Empowers Health Workers Delivering Prevention of Vertical Transmission of HIV Services and Decreases Desire to Leave in Mozambique
Background Despite increased access to treatment and reduced incidence, vertical transmission of HIV continues to pose a risk to maternal and child health in sub-Saharan Africa. Performance-based financing (PBF) directed at healthcare providers has shown potential to improve quantity and quality of maternal and child health services. However, the ways in which these PBF initiatives lead to impr...
متن کاملThe Impact of Motivation on the Work Performance of Health Workers (Korle Bu Teaching Hospital): Evidence from Ghana

متن کاملSources of Variability and Adaptive Tasks
It is known that micro-task worker performance fluctuates. While between-worker variability has been studied and has been used to define filters (e.g., to filter out “bad” workers), within-worker variability (i.e. how each worker's performance varies over time) has received less attention. Better understanding of the sources of such variability will result in the design of better filters, and m...
